In the 9th century, the church was rebuilt by the Doge Pietro III Candiano, as a repository of the relics of St. John the Baptist. The temple was originally built in the Gothic style. It acquired its present appearance as a result of reconstruction work carried out at the turn of the XV – XVI centuries. Next to the main altar in the side-altar is the crypt"Madonna and Child with Saints Andrew and John" by Bartolomeo Vivarini. The temple also contains several works by Alvise Vivarni and Cima da Conegliano. The cathedral is famous for the fact that Pietro Barbo and Antonio Vivaldi were baptized there, as well as Paul II – future pope. In the parish of the church, the playwright Giacinto Gallina was born.
