Vauban, military advisor to Louis XIV, fortified the fort in the 18th century. Louis XIV made the fort the main military base. Napoleon Bonaparte was imprisoned in this fort. He was threatened with the death penalty, but General Dugomier convinced the court that France should not be deprived of such a gifted warrior. Thanks to him, Napoleon was pardoned.
