Photo and description

Affandi Museum is located in Yogyakarta, Java island. The museum building stands on the banks of the Gajah Wong River. Initially, it was the house in which the artist Affandi, an Indonesian impressionist painter and graphic artist, lived and worked, and after his death the house became a museum.

Affandi was born in 1907 in the port city of Cirebon, which is located on the northern coast of Java in the West Java province. The father wanted his son to become a doctor, but Affandi wanted to become an artist and began to study art, learn to draw. In 1947 Affandi created the People's Artists Association, and in 1952 the Indonesian Artists' Union. A special technique of the artist was to work with a tube of paint like a brush. The artist got such a technique as a result of a funny incident: he was looking for a pencil to draw a line, and when his patience ran out, as the pencil was not there, he just took a tube of paint and began to draw.

Affandi himself designed and built his house, which later became a museum. The architecture of the house is quite unusual, its roof is shaped like a banana leaf.

The museum contains about 250 paintings by the artist, including self-portraits. In addition, guests can see personal items, cars and bicycles that the artist used in his time. The collection includes works by other artists. The artist Affandi, already well-known, took part in many exhibitions in different countries. The artist's grave is located on the territory of the museum complex, as he bequeathed.
