The history of the museum begins in 1789, after the fall of the monarchy. Then almost all art objects were nationalized. The works of art taken from the royal collections and the collections of aristocrats were distributed among the museums of the country. Of course, most of the valuable paintings went to the Louvre in Paris, but the museum in Rouen was not spared. The Museum of Fine Arts in Rouen was created on the initiative of the master of historical painting Lemonnier and the famous artist Le Carpentier. After a change in the political situation in 1794, orders began to come in to return the paintings. However, most of the art objects remained in the possession of the Rouen authorities. In 1799, they were collected in a building formerly owned by the Jesuit Order. After the Napoleonic campaigns from different countries, captured by the emperor, a stream of paintings and sculptures poured in. During this period, the country received more than a thousand paintings by famous artists. In 1806, thanks to the activities of Lemonier, the Rouen Museum received 38 paintings from the Louvre store. But the museum was opened for visits only in the summer of 1809. During the 19th century, the museum's collection was replenished, which led to the construction of a new museum building, which lasted for twelve years. In 1888 a new museum was opened.
