The Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II is located in the old town of Graz. It is the family tomb of the imperial family. The construction of the mausoleum began in 1614 by decree of Ferdinand II. Four years after the construction began, the emperor died, and his grandson Leopold I finished the business.

The mausoleum was built according to the project of the painter and architect   Giovani Pietro de Pomisa, and the interior design is by Fischer von Erlach.   In general, the mausoleum is considered an example of the original direction of the Baroque style developing at that time - Austrian Mannerism.

In order to get to the mausoleum, you need to go along a narrow passage, framed on both sides by bas-reliefs of semi-columns, which are made in the Corinthian style. The facade of the building is decorated with many sculptures arranged in tiers, but nevertheless they harmoniously fit into the overall picture.

Emperor Ferdinand II, his wife, one of his sons and Mary of Bavaria - mother emperor. In the most beautiful sarcophagus, which is made of red marble and is located in the very center of the vault, lies Mary of Bavaria. The initiator of the creation of this unusual place is mentioned only by a small inscription on a simple stone slab.

The mausoleum includes not only burials, but also a small church of St. Catherine, which was also built by order of the emperor Ferdinand II.
