The mausoleum was built in 1614-1633. by order of Emperor Ferdinand II as the burial vault of his family members and himself. This is a fine example of Austrian mannerism.

The narrow facade, decorated with numerous sculptures, consists of several levels, which creates an extremely harmonious composition. The interior of the mausoleum was made by von Erlach.
