Humboldt University is the oldest university in Berlin, founded on the initiative of Wilhelm von Humboldt in 1809. In 1828, it was named after the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm III by the Friedrich Wilhelm University, and in   1949 renamed in honor of the Humboldt brothers. The training began in 1810, when 256 students studied here. In 2008 - 34612 people. Humboldt University in the XX century was the largest scientific center in Germany and Europe. The faculties of philosophy (including the study of natural sciences), law, medicine, theology were opened.

The university appeared thanks to the most famous scientists of that time, in particular, the philosopher Johann Gottlieb Fichte and theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher. Linguist Wilhelm von Humboldt, drawing on the ideas of Schleiermacher, developed the concept of the institution. The goal of Humboldt, then the head of the education department in the Ministry of the Interior, was to introduce a new education system. The main principle of his concept was the close connection of theoretical education with research work.

In addition to traditional subjects, including philology, history, medicine, archeology and theology, natural sciences developed here. Alexander von Humboldt contributed to their development. In the second half of the 19th century, he began to create research and educational institutions. Other institutions related to the university grew up in the city: a medical and surgical clinic (1810), a maternity hospital (1816), which later became the first women's clinic, a hospital for plague patients (1910), which became a surgical university clinic in 1927.

In 1889, an entire building was allocated to store the natural-historical collections of the university (today it is the Museum of Natural History). The Veterinary School, founded in 1790, grew into the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and the Agricultural School, founded in 1881, into the Faculty of Agriculture.

During   National Socialism, the university was going through hard times: scholars and students of Jewish origin were persecuted. Some students and staff participated in the burning of books on May 10, 1933, which was a real shame for the university.

The university was opened only after the war, in 1946. Its revival began, despite the fact that most of the buildings were dilapidated.

By 1949, the Humboldt University became the largest educational institution in the GDR, about 150 thousand students studied here and the most famous scientists taught. The University is constantly growing and developing; since 1994, 11 faculties, several interdisciplinary centers and institutes have been operating in it; the buildings of the university are scattered throughout Berlin. Partnerships have been established with over 170 scientific institutions of the world.
