The street gained wide popularity thanks to the palaces of the Genoese aristocracy located on it. The street is 250 meters long and 7.5 meters wide. The street was founded in 1550 and was designed by the architect Galeazzo Alessi. The street was originally named Strada Maggiore, after Strada Nuova. The street acquired its current name only in 1882 in honor of Giuseppe Garibaldi, who was the national hero of Italy.
