Alexander Nevsky Church – an Orthodox church located on Empress Avenue, belonging to the Archdiocese of Russian Orthodox Churches in Western Europe, the Russian Exarchate under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in Biarritz. Rector of the church – Archpriest Alexy Struve.

In 1879 it was decided to build a temple on the shores of the Gulf of Gascon, but the financial resources were not enough, and therefore instead of building a separate temple, one of the halls of the former palace of Empress Eugenia was occupied as the temporary premises of the church.

In 1899, the previously assembled Committee for the Organization and Consolidation of the Existence of the Orthodox Home Church in Biarritz was officially approved. Thanks to his activities, the flow of donations for the construction of a separate temple increased.

The project of the temple, created by N.N. Nikonov, began to be carried out in October 1890, when the walls were laid. The temple was consecrated two years later. The church became an independent, separate building, but the name `` house '' it survived.

After the Revolution, the temple passed into the hands of Metropolitan Evlogy Georgievsky, who headed the Orthodox Russian parishes in Western Europe. Since 1931, the Church of Alexander Nevsky has been a member of the Russian Exarchate of the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

In December 2004, at an extraordinary parish meeting chaired by Archpriest Georgy Monzhokh, removed from the abbot, it was decided to transfer the church under the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate. On the same day, an announcement appeared on the website of the Patriarchate about `` reunification with the Mother Church. '' Temple of Biarritz. A little later, the church became part of the Korsun Diocese of the Moscow Patriarchate.

However, the decision of Archpriest George Monzhokh was not accepted by all parishioners and the leadership of the Archdiocese of Russian Orthodox Churches in Western Europe, which is under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Archbishop Gabriel of Coman has appointed a new abbot – Alexy Struve, and he, in turn, applied to the court with a request to cancel the decision. His request was granted, the Moscow Patriarchate began to hold services in other premises. In 2009, the Court of Cassation finally secured the ownership of the church for the Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Archdiocese.

The decoration of the Alexander Nevsky church is not particularly remarkable. The two-domed Byzantine-style church has a low iconostasis and a minimal number of images.

The church is located near the main beach in Biarritz.
