Photo and description

Bayonet Obelisk is the main monument of the Brest Fortress Memorial Complex. The obelisk was designed by the Belarusian branch of the Central Research Institute `` Proektstalkonstruktsiya '' and was installed on July 5, 1971.

The Obelisk is a complex engineering structure 104.5 meters high and weighing 620 tons. Size at the base 5.5 meters, at the top 2.6 x 0.45 meters. The monument is visible from anywhere in the Brest Fortress and far beyond its borders. It is a bayonet of the legendary Mosin rifle "Three-Line", which was in service with the Soviet Army during the war, and symbolizes the victory of the Soviet people over the Nazi invaders, eternal glory to the heroes of the Brest Fortress.

The bayonet is divided into ten sections. with a steel frame, faced with titanium sheets. The sections of the monument were made at the metalwork plant of the USSR Ministry of Montazhstroy in Molodechno and transported to Brest on specially prepared road trains. The final assembly of the obelisk was carried out at the site of its installation in the memorial complex of the Brest Fortress. The fully assembled Bayonet was raised in two stages: first to a level of 45 degrees, the second to a vertical position. The total installation time was 5 hours 30 minutes.

Despite the fact that the experience of erecting such structures in the USSR was the first, all Bayonet structures withstood the test for years. The obelisk was restored three times: in 1998, the damper devices were replaced, in 2000 a platform faced with granite was built around the obelisk, in 2008-2009 the frame of the Bayonet obelisk was repaired.
