It began to be built in the 9th century, but since then the fortress has been rebuilt and restored many times. The hill is surrounded by three rings of walls. Only the Arco de Cristo and Torre de la Vela towers remain from the original construction. The gardens that are laid out in its courtyards give a very special charm to the fortress. Today an archaeological museum is open in the Alcazaba, where you can see objects that were found during excavations of Roman structures, as well as models of the castle and Spanish-Arab pottery. On the western slope the hill contains the ruins of a Roman theater, which was built during the reign of Emperor Augustus.
