The cathedral was erected under Cardinal Lavigerie in honor of the French king Louis IX saint, who died in these places in 1270 during the siege of Tunisia. He was buried here, and in 1964 he was reburied in Rome. Until 1965, the Cathedral of St. Louis was the seat of the Archbishop of Carthage.
