Photo and description

On a high picturesque hill in Almeria, there is an ancient defensive complex - the fortress of Almeria. The name of the fortress - Alcazaba comes from the Arabic word al-qasbah, meaning a fortification from the fortress walls, located in the city.

The Alcazaba fortress was built at the end of the 10th century under the ruler Abd-ar-Rahman III. It is the largest fortress of the Moorish period in the Pyrenees. Due to its favorable location on a high hill, the fortress remained invulnerable to enemies throughout its existence. In 1477 the fortress was conquered by the Christian king Alfonso VII, but after a while it was again captured by the Arabs. And only in 1489 the fortress finally passed into the power of the Christian royal dynasty.

At the beginning of the 20th century, most of the buildings of the fortress complex were restored. Today the complex consists of two rows of fortress walls, inside which you can see a palace in the shape of a triangle, terraces, orchards. The water supply system located on the territory of the fortress deserves special attention, which consists of a well, a fountain and a reservoir with water and demonstrates to visitors the principles of supplying the Alcazaba with water. There are also two museums, whose collections reveal the history of the fortress.

In 1933, the Alcazaba of Almeria was declared a national architectural treasure, and it was given the status of a National Historical and Architectural Monument.
