The square is the most popular historical center of the city and hosts numerous city events, political rallies and other events. Around the square are the buildings of various organizations, in particular local newspapers, built in the traditional Flemish style. In the center of the square there is a column crowned with a female figure. The column was erected in memory of repelling the siege of the Austrians in 1872.
