Rating: 8,6/10 (3542 votes)  This castle is one of the oldest and most unusual female in Spain. Translated from ancient Catalan, its name means 'favorite species'. Indeed, this castle, located on a hill near the city center, offers a magnificent view of the bay and the city. Despite the fact that the castle is more than seven hundred years old, it is magnificently preserved, unlike other castles in Spain. Bellver Castle is famous for its unique rounded shape and its defensive exterior. In 1300 the castle was rebuilt by King James II. It became a fortress and a Gothic palace. The castle has a courtyard, three massive towers and some other unique architectural features. Almost all stones which were used for the construction of this castle, were taken from a quarry, which is located 40 meters below the castle. Throughout its existence, the castle was no longer used as a residence of kings, but as a prison. It held prisoners during the country's internal wars. In the 1950s, those who had been imprisoned for participating in the civil war were exiled here. One of the most famous prisoners of this place is Gaspar Melchor de Jovelanos. He wrote many of his works here. Today the castle is a very popular attraction. The castle and its surrounding areas were transferred to the Palma City Council on condition that an antique city museum will be created on this territory. After visiting the museum, you can get to know the history of Palma better, as well as see beautiful pottery and artifacts. Almost all of the exhibits on display in the museum were found during archaeological excavations. The castle is also used for cultural events.
