It acquired its present appearance during the renovations carried out in the XII century. The temple was consecrated in honor of the Virgin Mary. The second part of the name was given to the church in honor of Saint Donatus – a 4th century bishop whose relics were transported from Kefalonia to the church in 1125. The cathedral features a 12th century mosaic floor with images of mythological animals and floral ornaments. The Cathedral of Santi Maria e Donato, along with other attractions in Venice, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
