Adolf Hitler, who came to power in 1939, decided to unite all the unused areas adjacent to the Grunewald racecourse and create a huge sports complex, which would include a stadium with a capacity of about 86,000 people, a hockey stadium, a riding arena, a swimming pool and an outdoor sports arena. The Olympic Stadium was designed by Werner Markh in 1936. In the same year, the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games was held here, which was broadcast live for the first time in the world. Like many other outstanding architectural objects of the city, the Olympic Stadium was badly damaged by bombing during the Second World War. It was rebuilt in the mid-1960s. After the unification of Germany, the Olympic Stadium became the center of the country's football events. All the most important matches are held here.
