Roman theater in Mainz – one of the largest ancient Roman theaters north of the Alps, excavated just a few years ago. Theater diameter – more than 100 meters, and the number of seats for spectators – 10 000. Mainz has always been of great strategic importance due to its convenient location at the mouth of the Main River. Therefore, even in BC times there was a fortified camp of the Roman legion. The last time the theater was mentioned in the sources of the 11th century, however, today's musical and theatrical performances are held on the ruins of the theater.
