The history of the university dates back to 1566. At that time, the first Jesuit school in the city was founded. In 1573, the school received the status of a European university. Throughout its history, the university was repeatedly closed, being the object of strife between church and state. In 1946, the university received its current name in honor of the famous Czech figure of the 19th century – Frantisek Palacky. Today Palacky University is one of the leading educational institutions in the Czech Republic. Under the influence of the university, Olomouc began to be considered a student.
