This city is located 12 kilometers south of Mycenae. Argos – it is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Greece. It is believed that the city itself is 5 thousand years old, but people lived here long before that.

This city is located near the sea, on two hills: Larissa and Aspid. Argos was the eternal rival of Mycenae and Sparta, for a long time it occupied a dominant position in Argolis, being, moreover, a major center of worship of the goddess Hera.

There are not many ancient sites left in the city. It is worth seeing the Roman baths, the Roman odeon and the theater, which could accommodate up to 20 thousand spectators. An almost conical acropolis rises above modern houses and ancient monuments. It is crowned with Larissa Castle, built in the Middle Ages on the site of an ancient fortress. Later, the castle was expanded, first by the Venetians, and then by the Turks.

The archaeological museum of Argos contains items that were found during excavations in Mycenae and in numerous burials around the city. Southeast of the city, 4 kilometers away, are the ruins of Tiryns – coastal outpost of Argos and Mycenae. This fortress is more than 3 thousand years old. Some of its walls are 7 meters thick and are built of large stone blocks.
