In the 18th century, the tower housed a prison and a guardhouse. After the city was liberated, the tower was painted white, which meant cleansing of the past. Then the tower got its modern name. However, now almost nothing is left of the white paint and the tower looks exactly the same as under Turkish rule. Now the White Tower houses a museum of art and history of the city. Especially noteworthy are the frescoes and icons. You can climb to the top of the tower and from there look at the bay and the city of Thessaloniki itself.
