This museum was founded by Isabella Bragana, wife of Ferdinand the Seventh. It was housed in a modern building like the Royal Museum in 1819. Here you can see the works of artists from the German, Flemish, Dutch and Italian schools.

In addition to the central building of the museum, which contains a collection of paintings from the Middle Ages to the early 18th century, there is another branch in the palace Villahermosa. It houses works from the 12th to 20th centuries from the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection. The second branch is located on Philip IV street. It exhibits 19th century Spanish sculpture and painting, as well as works by French and English painters.

The museum displays works by such masters as Murillo, Zurbaran, Ribera, El Greco, Berruguete, a huge collection of paintings by Velazquez (Meninas, Delivering Delirium, Spinners and others) and Goya (Nude Mach, Family of King Charles the Fourth and other portraits). The Dutch school is represented by such artists as Bosch, Rogier van der Weyden, Bruegel and others. You can also see works by German, Italian and other artists.

In addition to paintings, the museum contains collections of ancient coins, jewelry and porcelain.
