The Basilica was built in the 4th century over a building dating from the 2nd century AD. The temple was built in memory of Saint Pudencian, who was the sister of Saint Praskeda. Putenziana became famous for its amazing mosaics. In the 13th century, the bell tower of the basilica was completed. Large-scale reconstruction of the building was carried out in 1588.
