Church of Panaya tou Arak in Cyprus, Troodos resort
Rating: 8,2/10 (3100 votes)  Panayia tou Arak church near the village of Lagudera. It was founded in 1192, and was considered the private church of the wealthy Byzantine Leo Authentic. His name is carved on one of the side-altars of the temple. This temple was the first church on the island, the dome of which contained the image of Christ the Almighty. The church is decorated with the most beautiful paintings in Cyprus. The artist who executed the frescoes, judging by the style of execution, was one of the best students of the school of Constantinople. These murals are striking in their tragedy and colorfulness at the same time. All the frescoes have survived to this day in good condition, this is due to the observance of all the rules for applying frescoes (the frescoes should be applied on wet plaster, and not on already dried, as many others have done). Panaya tou Araka Church is included in the UNESCO cultural heritage list.
