The bridge got its name either because of the pier to which barges used to moor earlier, delivering straw for prisons, or because of the house that stood at this place , where the straw merchant lived. The bridge was erected in the middle of the 14th century and significantly enlarged in the 19th century. The bridge overlooks the gloomy Palace Canal with the Bridge of Sighs. The Straw Bridge, along with other sights of Venice, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
