Islam appeared in Tibet only in the 9th century. This mosque was built here in 1716. Its second name is the Hebalin Mosque.

In 1793 the mosque was expanded, but soon after that it burned down. The mosque was rebuilt after the Chinese conquest of Tibet in 1959. It was in this region that special privileges were introduced for Muslims. In total, about 2 thousand Muslims live in Lhasa. There are 2 mosques in the city, including this one and three more holy graves.

The area of the main hall of the mosque is 285 square meters.
