Previously, the walls surrounding the Upper City had five gates through which one could enter the city. A stone gate led to the city from the east. They were built at the beginning of the XIII century. In 1731, the entire old town was damaged by a strong fire. The fire destroyed most of Zagreb, and the gate miraculously survived. Also, the icon of the Mother of God was not touched by the fire. In honor of this, during the reconstruction, it was decided to install a small chapel with an icon of the Mother of God at the gate. This place is very popular among tourists and locals alike. Many believers come to the icon to pray.
