The Church of St. Mary Magdalene is one of the most valuable sights of church architecture in Karlovy Vary. The temple is located next to the Hot Spring Colonnade, in the central part of the city.

During the Middle Ages, a Gothic church was located on the site of the present temple. The church was first mentioned in written records in 1485. For many centuries the church was owned by the Order of the Crusaders.

Prague architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer was commissioned to design the building of the new cathedral. The architecture of the church fully conveys the features of the magnificent Baroque style, also including dynamic and classical styles.

The church houses a unique altarpiece of Mary Magdalene, created by Elias Dolhopf from Gorny Slavkov. Two Madonnas, executed in the Gothic style, as well as Baroque plastic artfully created by Zberl, give the cathedral a perfect look. In the pedestal under the church there are spacious crypts made of aragonite and granite. Also, the temple has a unique plaster design.

In 1759, during a strong fire, the temple of St. Mary Magdalene was badly damaged – both towers and the bulbous dome were completely destroyed, which was soon replaced by spacious gable roofs. The domes were restored only in 1861.
