Castle of Corigliano in Italy
Rating: 7,5/10 (100 votes)  Castle of Corigliano is one of the most popular castles located in southern Italy. The castle is located in the town of Corigliano Calabro, in the Calabria region of the province of Cosenza. The castle was erected in 1073, as one of the outposts, while being built by Roberto Giskardo – Norman general. Until the 18th century, the castle was called Palazzo Sangro. Throughout its long history, the castle was rebuilt several times, but managed to preserve the original elements in the architecture. In the 14th century, the estate was owned by Roberto Sanseverino IV. In 1339-1361, the castle underwent large-scale reconstruction work, during which it was turned into a residence. In 1345, Charles the Third Small, later the King of Naples, was born here. In 1487-1495, the castle housed the royal military garrison. During this period, the fortress was reconstructed again. In the 17th century, a low octahedral round tower and a chapel of St. Augustine were erected. In the 18th century, the castle was owned by the Dukes of Corigliano, after whom it got its current name. The last major restructuring took place here in the 19th century, led by the architect Gaetano Genovesi. Today, the castle of Corigliano houses the departments of the Oriental University, and a historical exhibition is open for tourists.
