Photo and description
One of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in the world, the Freiburg Cathedral, was built in 1200-1510 on the site of an old cathedral. The main attraction of the cathedral is its carved tower with a spire 116 meters high. The lower part of the tower was built under the direction of the master Gerhart in the 1270s, and the top with a spire crowning it was erected in the 1310s by Heinrich der Leiter. A simple, square tower, covering the entire western facade, over the roof of the cathedral is transformed into an octahedron by narrow, highly elongated lattice windows, framed in their upper part by wimpergs. The windows, cutting through all the sides of the tower, turn it into an openwork tent, allowing you to see the sky from all sides. There is an observation deck with a magnificent view of the old streets, roofs of houses and surroundings.
Construction of the choir began in 1354 under the direction of the famous architect Johann Parler, who was appointed for life in 1359 as the main builder of the cathedral. The choir, designed by Parler, was completed in 1500. Moreover, the choir of the cathedral was above the nave.
The construction of the chapels, diverging in different directions from the choir, began under Parler. Some chapels are decorated with 14th century stained glass windows. The main altarpiece of the cathedral was created in 1512-1516 by the artists Hans Baldwin Green, Hans Holbein the Younger and Lucas Cranach the Elder. The heavy bell of the cathedral is considered one of the oldest in Germany.
