This place is a sacred place not only for Jews, but also adherents of Islam. Today – it is a rectangular square, surrounded by high walls and towering above other significant shrines of the Old City. The walls around the Temple Mount were built during the Ottoman period. They include 11 gates. Seven gates are located on the Western wall: the gate of the Chain (Peace), the Mugrabi gate, the Purification gate (Bath), the Cotton gate, the Iron gate, the Overseer's gate (Prison), and the gate of the Ghanim family. Three gates are located on the North Wall: the Dark Gate, the Gate of the Forgiveness of Sins and the Gate of the Tribes of Israel. And on the Eastern wall there is the Golden Gate (Gate of Mercy), immured during the Ottoman rule. Today, you can get to the Temple Mount by going through the Mugrabi gate. There is also a famous monument on the Temple Mount – Dome of the Rock (Mosque of the Rock), erected on the site of the temple that stood here.
