Palmanova Fortress in Italy
Rating: 7,8/10 (110 votes)  The fortress city of Palmanova is located at the foot of the Alps, 120 kilometers from the city of Venice. The fortress was built by the government of the Venetian Republic in 1593. Construction work was carried out according to a model fortification project in memory of the victory over the Ottoman Empire that took place under Lepanto. Upon completion of the construction, the city acquired the shape of an even nine-cornered star. There are only three streets in the city that end with gates. The center of the city is the hexagonal Grande square, from where the rays of six streets stretch to the defensive walls. The fortress was designed by Vincenzo Scamozzi.
