City of Gortis (Gortyna) in Greece, resort of Crete
Rating: 8,2/10 (1246 votes)  The ruins of this city are located at a distance of 46 kilometers from the city of Heraklion. Gortis was mentioned in Plato's records as the richest city in Crete. This city experienced the heyday of the Roman Empire. Gortis was especially famous for his city rights – archaeologists have found here a code of laws dating back to the 5th century BC, which was carved in stone. The ruins occupy a fairly large area. On their territory are located such attractions as baths, the Temple of Apollo, the second century BC praetorium, the St. Titus Basilica of the 5th century AD, the Sanctuary of Serapis and Isis, the odeon and other buildings.
