The Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Guadelupe is located in the Spanish province of Casares, in the city of Guadalupe. The construction of the monastery began in 1340 at the direction of King Alfonso XI in the place where the chapel was previously located, in which, according to legend, a small statue of the Virgin Mary was discovered. In the XIV century, the monastery taught the art of medicine, comprehended the secrets of grammar, the largest library of Spain at that time was located here.

At the beginning of the XIX century, the monastery was plundered by soldiers of the French army, and at the beginning of the last century restoration work was carried out in it by Franciscan monks. This monastery has great historical as well as cultural value and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993.
