Machpela – this is the name of the tomb located in the cave. Other names of this historical monument:   Mearat-ha-Mahpela, and also the Double Cave. Traditionally it is believed that this is the burial place of Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Leah, as well as Abraham and Sarah, people mentioned in the Bible. There is also a legend that the first couple on earth were buried in Makhpel - Adam and Eve.

The tomb of Machpel is revered by representatives of different religions. Both Muslims and Christians and, of course, Jews come to worship her. In the 13th century, a mosque was built over this cave. For many centuries, neither Jews nor Christians could visit Machpela.

In 1967, the cave was opened, but the sacred tombs were walled up. Currently, the Makhpela cave tomb is divided into two parts: one is for Muslims, and the other for the Jews. But on days when various religious holidays are celebrated, believers of different confessions can visit both parts of the tomb without any hindrance.
