The Cathedral of St. Euphemia is a symbol of the city and one of its main attractions.

The temple was erected in honor of St. Euphemia. During the reign of Emperor Diocletian, the Christian Euphemia was asked to renounce the Christian faith, to which the girl refused. She was subjected to various tortures, but the angels always saved the woman. After her death, Euphemia was buried in the vicinity of the hometown of Chalcedon, and later a temple was built on the burial site. In 617, the saint's relics were transported to Constantinople, and in 800 the sarcophagus with the relics disappeared in a strange way. After a while, he was found on a raft in the sea near the town of Rovinj. The sarcophagus was placed in the church of St. George.

In 1725-1736, on the site of the Church of St. George, the Cathedral of St. Euphemia was erected. The statue of St. George still adorns the main altar. The cathedral was built in the Baroque style, and the facade is made in Venetian style (XIX century). Next to the cathedral was built a bell tower, 57 meters high, which is crowned with a statue of Saint Euphemia with a height of 4.7 meters. Until 1758, the statue was wooden, and a little later it was replaced by a copper one.

The bell tower of the Cathedral is an exact copy of the bell tower of the Venetian Cathedral of St. Mark. From the top of the bell tower a magnificent panorama of the city and the sea opens. You can climb it by paying a small amount of money.

The interior of the cathedral is very rich. Here you can see magnificent statues of saints, decorating the niches of the cathedral, as well as paintings by Giovanni Contarini. The sarcophagus with the relics of St. Euphemia is kept behind the altar.

Every year on September 16 (the day of commemoration of the holy Martyr Euphemia), thousands of pilgrims gather in Rovinj who wish to worship the saint.
