St. Bartholomew's Cathedral is the main cathedral of the city of Pilsen.

In 1295, during the foundation stone of the city of"New Pilsen"; Wenceslas II decided to create the Dominican and Franciscan temples. The first masses were held in 1307 in the still unfinished church, as evidenced by the ancient chronicles.

Almost from the very moment of its foundation, the temple in 1322 by order of John of Luxembourg was transferred to the Teutonic Order, under the management which remained until 1546.

The tower of the temple, reaching a height of over 100 meters, during its creation was the second tallest building in the country. And today the tower makes the cathedral one of the tallest religious buildings in Bohemia. The observation deck is located at a height of 62 meters. In 2001, due to frequent suicide attempts, the site was surrounded by a protective net.

The statue of the Virgin Mary of Plzen is one of the shrines of the temple and an object of pilgrimage. Until now, the name of the sculptor remains unknown, the statue itself dates back to 1390. During the Hussite wars, many copies of this statue were made. Most likely, at this time, the image of the Pilsen Virgin Mary was considered as a symbol of the Catholic faith during a period of religious unrest. The material for the sculpture was sandy marl. The statue is 134 centimeters high. Nowadays, the sculpture is located in the niche of the main altar, reconstructed in 1883 in the neo-gothic style according to the project of Joseph Motzker. By 1750 there were 33 altars in the cathedral.

The most ancient part of the temple is the presbytery, which was built in the first half of the 14th century. The construction of the three-aisled hall was completed in 1476, while the interior of the cathedral reached its present size. Under Charles the Fourth, the construction of one tower was completed, although two towers were originally laid.

In 1993, the church received the status of a cathedral.
