Church of the Annunciation on Myachine description and photos - Russia - Northwest: Veliky Novgorod. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photos and a map showing the nearest significant objects. Photo and descriptionThe Church of the Annunciation on Myachin is located south of the city, halfway to the Yuryev Monastery. Here in 1170, in memory of the miraculous salvation of the city by the icon "Our Lady of the Sign", Archbishop John (Elijah) and his brother Gavril (Gregory) founded the Arkazhsky monastery. And in 1179, over 70 summer days, a stone church was built here, which has survived to this day only up to half the height. The upper part of the walls, vaults and the dome collapsed in the XIV century and were rebuilt at the same time. In 1189, the temple was painted. The customer of the paintings was the same Gavril (Gregory), who after the death of his brother became the archbishop of Novgorod. The surviving rather significant fragments have now been cleared away and provide an opportunity to get acquainted with one of the variants of the Byzantine style in monumental painting of the 12th century. The frescoes are executed in a bold and decisive manner. The figures of people are graceful, slender, their faces are very expressive. The painting is done in golden yellow and purple-green tones.
