Photo and description

The name of the Tithe Monastery, first mentioned in the annals of 1327, obviously comes from the word "tithe" - the princely land on which the monastery was built. Gradually, cells, a refectory, a chapel, outbuildings and, finally, a gate bell tower, by which the Tithes Monastery is still recognized today, were added to the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin and the Church of St. John the Baptist.

One of the famous Novgorod legends is associated with the monastery. It is believed that it was opposite the Tithes Monastery that Vladyka of Novgorod stood on the city wall in 1170, holding in his hands the miraculous icon of the Mother of God of the Sign, so that she would turn away the regiments of Suzdal residents from the city. An enemy arrow pierced the image, tears flowed from the eyes of the Mother of God, clouds thickened, the Suzdal warriors went blind, and the Novgorodians had only to complete their defeat.

In 2002, the State Museum of Artistic Culture of the Novgorod Land placed its collections on the territory of the monastery. The museum presents works of art by Novgorod artists of the late XX - early XXI century. Works of fine art are made in different techniques: painting, graphics (watercolor, pastel, etching, pencil drawing, linocut, etc.). Of particular interest are the magnificent tapestries and batik, as well as works of glass and porcelain, in which the artists continue the traditions of the largest in the northwest of the early 20th century. factories of the Kuznetsov family ("Kuznetsovskie zavody").
