Photo and description

The Roman Catholic Church of St. John of Nepomuk is located on a hill in the center of the Tyrolean village of Hopfgarten in Defereggen. The Church of St. John of Nepomuk was built in 1756 and consecrated in 1798. In the first half of the 19th century, its interior was renovated. In 1891 the church of St. John of Nepomuk became a parish church. The church is surrounded by a walled cemetery.

The church looks very simple. It is a small Baroque building, adjoined to the north by a small narrow tower with a spire. The sacred structure is crowned with a steep gable roof. In addition to the only nave, the church has a polygonal sacristy.

The internal space of the church is decorated with original lamps of complex construction and heavy wooden furniture. Visitors to the temple immediately notice the high double gallery and paintings on religious themes that appeared here in 1826. The art canvases are by Christoph Brandstatter Sr. and Christoph Brandstatter Jr. In 1903, these paintings were updated by Josef Kohler. The master who created the magnificent Baroque altar for the Church of St. John of Nepomuk in 1850-1855 was the famous sculptor Joseph Stauder. The altar with columns is decorated with figures of angels and statues depicting Saints Peter and Paul.

The organ was created in 1852 by Balthazar Massl. In 1937 it was rebuilt and expanded by Karl Reinisch.

In 2006, the 250th anniversary of the Church of St. John of Nepomuk was celebrated in Hopfgarten in Defereggen. By this date, it was repaired.
