Photo and description

Peania is a small town and municipality of the same name in eastern Attica. The city is a suburb of Athens and is located east of Mount Imitos (Gimet). Until the end of the 20th century, this area was known as Liopesi. Peania has a school, two lyceums, a gymnasium, banks and a post office. From the 5th to the 20th century, agriculture was the dominant industry in the region.

In the southwestern part of the city is the Vorres Museum of Popular and Contemporary Art, covering an area of 80 acres. The museum has over 6,000 exhibits that cover 4,000 years of Greek history and art. The museum exposition consists of two parts. The first part introduces visitors to painting and sculpture of the second half of the 20th century. The second part of the exhibition consists of two traditional peasant houses and a building that housed a grape press. The exposition introduces the lifestyle and everyday life of the population. It also displays archaeological finds and oil paintings and graphics on historical themes.

In 1981, a modern training base for the famous Greek football club Panathinaikos was built in Peania. The sports center meets high standards and has excellent technical equipment.

In the vicinity of Peania, on the eastern slope of Mount Imitos, at an altitude of 510 m, there is one of the largest and most interesting caves in Greece - Kutuki. This natural cave with mesmerizing stalactites and stalagmites of the most bizarre shapes is a real miracle of nature.
