Photo and description

In December 1937, the boat was laid down in Leningrad, already in 1939 on August 16, it was launched. Enlisted in the Northern Fleet on September 17, 1941. In the first military campaign, she set up an obstacle in the Best-Sunn Strait, consisting of 11 mines, and on the morning of November 11, 1941, a Norwegian transport called "Bessheim" blew up and sank in this place.

This ship has a glorious combat history. In the area of Ingey Island in July, more precisely on the 5th, 1942, K-21 discovered a squadron of German ships and attacked the enemy. As a result of a four-torpedo salvo, the enemy battleship Tirpitz was seriously damaged and was forced to return to a base in Norway.

During the entire war period, the K-21 sunk 17 German transports and warships, there have been twelve military campaigns and six mine installations.

In Severomorsk, you probably won't meet a person who does not know the main attraction that symbolizes the history and purpose of the city of naval sailors. For almost three decades, the legendary boat, the Red Banner K-21, which is a branch of the Northern Fleet Museum, has been in perpetual post. The submarine is located on Courage Square. 70 years ago, the naval flag was solemnly raised on the boat, and since then, the submarine has been keeping watch in the Arctic.

Today, the compartments of the submarine house expositions that describe the actions of the Second World War and the formation of submarine forces in the North in the post-war period. Personal belongings, photographs, awards of submariners and presented documents of that time better than any historian tell about the heroism of people who once led this boat into battle.

However, the main thing is the submarine itself. The combat situation is saved in four compartments - here you can literally touch history: batten down the rack, look into the periscope - feel like a true submariner.

During the war years, "K-21" under the command of Nikolai Lunin, Arkady Zhukov and Zaymar Arvanova made 12 military campaigns. The crew of this submarine won 17 victories.
For exemplary combat missions, for their heroism and courage, the K-21 crew was awarded the Order of the Red Banner in 1942. In general, during the war, submariners of the submarine were awarded 102 military orders and 35 medals.

In the fifties of the last century, the ship acted as a training simulator for sailors practicing damage control skills. In this capacity, it existed until the moment when the military council of the Northern Fleet signed a decree - to turn the submarine into a memorial complex, perpetuating the memory of the valor and military feat of submariners in the difficult war years. K-21, affectionately nicknamed by the sailors "Katyusha", found a permanent anchorage next to the berths of other warships in 1983, in the year of the 50th anniversary of the Northern Fleet.

On the day of the 70th anniversary of the submarine representatives of the administration of the Murmansk region, students of cadet classes, and military personnel came to pay tribute to the feat of the submariners. A rally took place. The sailors and cadets marched in a solemn march across the Square of Courage, symbolizing the continuity of generations. Wreaths and flowers were laid on the hull of the legendary boat. The holiday has passed, and the submarine remained on the historical watch.

In the period from 2008 to 2009, the museum was renovated, the exposition was also updated. The exhibition of the museum is constantly updated, giving visitors the opportunity, having visited the building, to get acquainted with the traditions of the ship and the Northern Fleet. Nowadays, the submarine performs an equally important mission - the military-patriotic education of the younger generation.
