Photo and description

Mount Musala is the highest point on the map not only of Bulgaria and the Balkan Peninsula, but of Eastern Europe as a whole. Musala rises above sea level at an altitude of almost three thousand meters - 2925. The mountain is composed of Paleozoic granites cut by granite-porphyry veins. The relief is mountain-glacial.

The name of the mountain is associated with the Turkish period of Bulgaria and literally "Mus Allah" can be translated as "prayer peak" or "proximity to Allah." However, in the period from 1949 to 1962. the mountain was named after Joseph Stalin - Stalin Peak.

Musala is located in the Rila National Reserve, which is famous for rare plant species (for example, Bulgarian spruce and Macedonian pine grow here). The Iskar, Mesta and Maritsa rivers flow at the foot of the mountain. The distance from Sofia is about 80 kilometers.

In addition, the Borovets ski base is located in the river valley. There are 18 trails for tourists, the total length of which is 40 kilometers. Each of the tracks, regardless of the complexity, is equipped with modern funiculars and lifts, the carrying capacity of which is not less than 10 thousand passengers per hour.

The hiking route to the top from Borovets will take about 7 hours, you will have to cover 10 kilometers - this route is considered the most optimal for beginners. The mountain is also equipped with a "cabin lift", which is a lift with cabins. With its help, tourists can get to special bases, which are located at heights of 1790 meters and 2362 meters.

At the very top of the mountain is the meteorological station of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
