The Beer Can Regatta is an event held since 1974 and attracts thousands of tourists every year in Darwin. Participants in the regatta build their boats from empty cans of beer and Coca-Cola, from plastic bottles and cardboard milk bags. Before the regatta, ships are not tested for sailing, and when a "ship" begins to fall apart, it becomes part of everyone's entertainment. During the days of the regatta, many other events are held in Darwin - concerts, competitions in throwing bikini swimwear and the Henley-on-Mindil competition, whose participants portray the characters of the cartoon "The Flintstones" (cartoon characters got into cars that had no bottom , and walked with their own legs).

More or less floating structures, that ever took part in a regatta are today part of the collection of the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney.

The first Beer Can regatta took place in June 1974, the brainchild of Lutz Frankenfeld and Paul Rice-Chapman, members of the Darwin Regional Tourism Development Association. Then Paul, who worked for a local newspaper, conceived the idea of organizing a water festival and developed the idea of building ships from empty beer cans. Lutz went further and suggested adding an outboard motor to the vessel. And so the regatta was born. In recent years, the regatta has been held at Mindil Beach in the summer - the date changes every year depending on the right tide time.
