Photo and description

Lake Vransko is the largest lake in Croatia, geographically it is located closest to the coast of the Adriatic Sea. It is separated from Biograd na Moru by only four kilometers to the east, and from Vodice - ten kilometers to the northwest. As a result, the western part of the lake belongs to Zadar County, and the eastern one to Sibenik-Kninska.

The total area of Lake Vranskoye is almost 31 sq. km, and its length is almost 14 kilometers and a width of just over two kilometers. The deepest lake is 4 meters. By its origin, Lake Vransko is a flooded karst cavity.

The peculiarity of the lake is its extremely close location to the Adriatic Sea: they are separated by an isthmus, the width of which is from half to one and a half kilometers. The Adriatic highway runs along it. The village of Pakoshtane is located on this isthmus not far from the northern end of Lake Vranskoye. The reservoir is elongated in the direction of the southeast from the northwest in parallel to the sea coast - its shape from above can be identified as oval. The lake is fed by streams, and the flow into the sea is carried out through a channel near the southeastern end of the reservoir, the width of which is no more than six hundred meters.

Lake Vransko is filled with fish, a large number of wild birds come to nest on it, among which the most important is the heron colony, which is carefully guarded by ornithologists.

A full-fledged natural park has been organized around the entire reservoir in order to be able to protect this natural landmark.
