Photo and description

Kammer Castle is a water palace originally built on an island on the northern shore of Lake Attersee, which at that time was named after this Kammersee castle. Subsequently, the island became a peninsula.

Kammer Castle is a massive rectangular, three-story structure with two curved lower side wings that form a courtyard decorated with graceful fountains and valuable sculptures. As a result of numerous alterations, the palace received facades in a strict, ascetic classical style. The castle is adjoined by a magnificent park with many secluded corners, which is loved by modern tourists. Kammer Castle is privately owned but open to the public. The current owner of the palace on Lake Attersee is the famous sportsman Sissi Max-Zehrer, who acquired the semi-abandoned and dilapidated castle in the 1990s and invested a lot in its restoration.

The first mention of Kammer Castle dates back to 1165, when it was acquired by Hadfalk von Hamme. In 1200 the castle was transformed into a defensive fortress, which became the center of the Schaberwerk County. In the following centuries, Kammer Castle was owned by emperors and representatives of the most famous aristocratic families. At the beginning of the 20th century, the palace was owned by the famous actress Eleanor von Mendelssohn.

Numerous tourists come to Kammer Castle not only for the beautiful views. They strive to see the structure that the famous Austrian painter Gustav Klimt has captured several times on his canvases.
