Photo and description

Gurzenich is one of the most famous halls in the city of Cologne, where organ concerts are regularly held. The building was built in the 15th century and got its name from its owners - the noble family Gurzenich. This house became a popular public building in the Middle Ages.

The building itself cannot be called majestic, its appearance may not attract particular attention. But what fills it, and these are concerts of classical music, attracts a large number of visitors and connoisseurs of musical art.

Gurzenich was laid out of rough dark colored stone, the framing of the roof looks more like a fortress wall, complemented by battlements. There are small turrets in the corners of the house.

Initially, this house became a place where a variety of entertainment events were constantly held, as well as serious political and diplomatic conferences and meetings. Gurzenich expected drastic changes in 1857, it was during this period that he was rebuilt. A large and beautiful concert hall was made of it, but the name remained the same. Now this house has become a place where all connoisseurs of classical music can come. From the middle of the 19th century, an orchestra was formed here, which took the name of the building.

If at the beginning of its existence Gurzenich could admire the splendor of his decoration, then after 1943 and the accompanying bombing, not a trace remained of him. During the war years, the entire structure was completely destroyed and, unfortunately, it was never fully restored. For this reason, it is difficult to recognize the Gothic public building of the Middle Ages in Gurzenich. Currently, the building looks very unusual, which was facilitated by a small additional annex made of glass and metal.
