The University of Costa Rica is the oldest educational institution in the country. It was founded in 1843 as the Catholic University of St. Thomas, in 1888 it was transformed into a secular educational institution, and in 1940 it became the first university of Ksta Rica. Now students have the opportunity to study here at one of six faculties - natural science, medicine, engineering, agrarian, art history and social science.
