Photo and description

Just 35 kilometers from the city of Bangalore, in the middle of the forest, there is a small and quiet village called Nrityagram, where exclusively women live. The word "nrityagram" means "dancing village" and is the best description of this place. The founder of the settlement in 1990 was Protima Gauri, the famous dancer of the Odissi dance. The village is a kind of student city, where a small number of girls constantly live and study the art of Indian dance.

On the territory of Nrityagram there is a dance school building, as well as living quarters. All these buildings are made exclusively from natural materials such as wood, stone, clay. The pupils grow their food on their own, and sew clothes with their own hands. The residents of the village prefer to live in harmony with nature, claiming that only nature can inspire a sincere dance that will be able to touch the soul and heart of the viewer.

Despite the fact that Protima Gauri died in 1998, her work lives on now. The village of Nrityagram has become a very popular destination with many girls eager to become part of this large family. But new students are recruited every 6 years, and only six lucky ones can be selected.

Nrityagram is a completely unique, incomparable place, where even the spirit of dance is in the air. In the village there are no newspapers, no television, no internet, there is only dance, which has become the meaning of life for girls. Although the villagers seem to be cut off from the whole world, in reality they are not. Guests and tourists often come to Nrityagram, and the women themselves go on tour from time to time. They are happy to show their skills to people, but you should know that they do not allow their performances to be filmed on camera, since they do not want the movements invented by them to be copied.
