Photo and description

Mayon Volcano is the most active volcano in the Philippine archipelago, located on the Bicol Peninsula near the city of Legazpi. The height of Mayon, which has an almost perfect conical shape, is 2462 meters, the length of the base is 130 km.

Over the past 400 years, the volcano has erupted more than 50 times! The most devastating eruption is considered to be in 1814, when the city of Sagzawa was destroyed by lava flows, and more than 1200 people died. The 1993 eruption killed 93 people. The last eruption began in July 2006 and for several years passed in the so-called "quiet phase", but in 2009 it passed into an active phase. As a result, tens of thousands of people living in the vicinity of the volcano were evacuated.

Despite the danger of an eruption, Mayon volcano is considered an attractive tourist attraction - it is located in the Mayon Volcano National Park, founded in 1938. The best time to visit the park is from March to May. You can get here along the Quirino highway, the journey by bus from Manila will take from 8 to 10 hours. The park, covering an area of 55 square kilometers, is home to numerous representatives of the Philippine nature, including the common scoop, fruit pigeon, Filipino owl, a variety of parrots and wild chickens. Hikers can go cross-country hikes, colorful bird watching, rock climbing or mountain biking.

Mayon Volcano, along with other creations of the Philippine nature - the Tubataha reef, The Chocolate Hills in Bohol Province and the Underground River in Palawan Island are included in the "New 7 Wonders of Nature" list.
